Who are the Disciples of Christ?

Harvey Park Christian Church is a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.). Often called "The Disciples", there are about 4,000 congregations in the United States and Canada.

The Disciples began in the early 1800s and is the oldest denomination formed on American soil. Today we are planting new congregations all over the country faster than most other mainline or evangelical groups. One of our basic desires is to help folks come into a saving, loving relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Disciples have always valued Christian unity. We see no valid reason for why the church of Jesus Christ on earth should be divided. Our statement of identity is a wonderful declaration of our desire to lead people to the wholeness and unity of Christ:

"We are the Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord's Table as God has welcomed us."
Our symbol is a red chalice with a Saint Andrew's cross on it. The chalice reminds us of the centrality of weekly communion in our worship services. The red reminds us of the Holy Spirit's presence with us. The X-shaped cross is the symbol of one of Jesus' first disciples named Andrew. He was very involved in bringing people to Jesus, and reminds us that we should do that, too.
